Indian equity markets ended lower on Wednesday, extending their losses to a second straight session.
The Nifty fell 0.34% to close at 22,811. The Sensex slipped 0.19% to finish at 73,710.
Information technology shares were the bright spot, leading the sectoral gains. Infosys and HCL Tech were at the top of the list of gainers, giving the market some support on a day when the main indices still closed in the red.
Other stocks were under pressure. Bajaj Finance, BSE and Eternal were among the biggest losers, weighing on the benchmarks.
The pattern on Wednesday was mixed. The IT names rose while financial and other stocks fell, so the overall decline in both indices was modest. The Nifty’s drop was a little under twice the size of the Sensex’s.
Wednesday’s moves follow a decline in the previous session, so investors have now seen two days of weakness. The strength in Infosys and HCL Tech suggests buyers were still willing to pick up technology shares even as the broader market eased.
