Jio Platforms IPO Could Shift How Investors Value Reliance and Airtel

The expected stock market listing of Jio Platforms is likely to change the way investors judge two of India’s biggest companies, Reliance Industries and Bharti Airtel.

For Reliance, the main question is whether a public Jio can narrow the holding-company discount. That discount reflects the tendency of markets to value a parent company at less than the combined worth of the businesses it owns. Once Jio trades on its own, investors will have a visible market price for the telecom arm, which could make it easier to see what that business is worth inside Reliance. That clearer view may lead to a smaller discount on Reliance shares.

Whether this amounts to a lasting re-rating of the stock is a separate matter. Unlocking value through a listing is not the same as changing how the market sees the whole group over the long term, and the debut will be one factor among several.

Airtel’s position looks different. The company stands to benefit from higher telecom tariffs, which lift average revenue per user, a key measure of how much each customer pays. Higher revenue per user feeds through to stronger overall profitability. A listed Jio would also give investors a direct comparison for Airtel’s own valuation, putting the two rivals side by side in the market.

Investor interest in the Jio offering points to firm confidence in where the telecom sector is heading. That enthusiasm suggests buyers see room for growth in the industry, and it may support sentiment towards both Reliance and Airtel as the listing approaches.

For now, the IPO is best seen as a potential catalyst rather than a guaranteed one. Reliance could see its holding-company discount shrink, while Airtel’s case rests on tariff increases and the earnings improvement they bring. How much of this is reflected in share prices will depend on how the market responds once Jio begins trading.
